Scientific studies

Three sound approaches serving well-being

Melodia brings together three complementary approaches: binaural beats and isochronic tones, nature sounds and relaxing music.

These components have been studied separately in various experimental and clinical settings. The research presented below suggests interesting effects on anxiety, stress, pain perception, sleep and certain cognitive functions.

Results vary, however, between individuals, protocols and listening durations. These studies support the principles on which Melodia was built.

Meta-analysis on cognition, anxiety and pain perception.

Binaural beats were associated with a statistically significant overall effect of moderate size (g = 0.45). The effect varied with the frequency used, the length of exposure and the moment of listening.

Moderately anxious patients treated in an emergency department.

After 20 minutes of listening, anxiety had fallen by roughly 10 to 15% in the groups exposed to a musical composition or to soundscapes, with or without binaural beats.

Randomised, double-blind, crossover trial in people living with chronic pain.

A 5 Hz binaural stimulation, listened to for 30 minutes and then on demand over one week, was associated with a decrease in pain, stress and painkiller use compared with a placebo stimulation.

Healthy adults listening to binaural beats, isochronic tones or their combination for 20 minutes a day over 21 days.

Improvements in some scores related to stress, anxiety and sleep were reported in certain groups. Variations in EEG activity were also observed.

Systematic review assessing whether binaural beats genuinely alter brain oscillations measured by EEG.

Five studies supported the brainwave-entrainment hypothesis, eight produced contradictory results and one showed mixed results.

Exposure to different sound environments after a task inducing psychological stress.

Skin conductance, an indicator of sympathetic activation, returned towards its baseline faster while listening to natural sounds than during exposure to noisy environments.

Patients hospitalised in intensive care and placed on mechanical ventilation.

Listening to natural sounds for 90 minutes was associated with a decrease in anxiety, agitation and blood pressure compared with the control group. The differences grew during listening and remained visible 30 minutes after it stopped.

Patients undergoing elective coronary angiography.

Patients exposed to pleasant natural sounds showed significantly lower anxiety during the procedure. The course of several physiological parameters also differed between groups.

Systematic review and meta-analysis of the effects of exposure to natural sounds on recovery.

The results show a significant decrease in anxiety, heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate after exposure to natural sounds.

Music

Patients who had suffered a middle cerebral artery stroke, allocated to music listening, audiobooks or a control group.

Listening daily to music chosen by the patient, at least one hour a day for two months, was associated with better recovery of verbal memory and focused attention. Patients also showed less depressed mood and confusion.

Two meta-analyses on the effects of music interventions on the psychological and physiological manifestations of stress.

Music interventions were associated with a significant effect on psychological stress (d = 0.545) and on several physiological responses (d = 0.380), notably heart rate and blood pressure.

Secondary analysis of a randomised trial in patients with moderate to severe traumatic brain injury.

After three months of neurological music therapy, changes in several white-matter pathways were observed. These changes correlated with an improvement in executive function.

This work documents the use of sound alongside care, in a non-pharmacological and non-invasive way. It does not constitute direct clinical validation of the application nor a guarantee of individual results, and sound therapy never replaces a treatment or a specialist consultation.
